Chiropractic and Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease in which the protective sheath around the brain and spinal cord (myelin) is attacked by the immune system. Because the central nervous system (CNS) is affected, symptoms can range from mild numbness in the arms or legs, weakness and stiffness to blindness and even paralysis.

There is no known cause of MS, however, there are factors that contribute to its development including:

  • The Immune System

  • Genetics

  • The Environment

  • Infection

Additional triggers that can aggravate symptoms of MS include stress, smoking, medication, heat, or a lack of sleep. Typical treatment for MS include corticosteroids for nerve inflammation and stress reduction.

For patients seeking for symptom relief without having to take additional medication, chiropractic care can be of benefit. Many patients with MS suffer from musculoskeletal conditions including back, neck, and joint pain that chiropractic adjustments can help.

There is also research done by Dr. Erin Elster which showed that correction of upper neck injuries may be able to reverse the progress of MS. She found a correlation between a history of neck injury(ies) and MS. In her study, 91% of the 44 patients in the study showed improvement after receiving adjustments to the upper neck. A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine. A subluxation in the neck region can compromise the proper functioning of the CNS. A chiropractor corrects subluxations by adjusting the spine which removes any interference to nerve pathways and improve CNS function.
